The Name "Mangajin"
Mangajin is a made-up word combining manga ("comics/cartoons") and jin ("person/people"). It sounds almost like the English word "magazine" as rendered in Japanese--magajin. Because it's a made-up word, the meaning is somewhat open to interpretation; it could refer to the "people" in the comics, or a person who enjoy reading them.

Japanese people usually get the pun right away, especially if they see the name, but over the years Mangajin staffers had more than one experience of talking to a Japanese person (sometimes in English, sometimes in Japanese) and saying "I'm with Mangajin," only to have them come back with "Yes, but which mangajin?"


What kind of person read(s) Mangajin?
The main focus of Mangajin is Japanese comics, but the typical Mangajin reader in the U.S. was 36 years old, male (70%), and a business/technical professional with an advanced degree. The rest of the readership was split between teachers (many of whom used Mangajin in class), students, and the ubiquitous "other" readers.

So Mangajin is not what most people think of as a "comic book." In fact, it has been called more of a literary magazine.

Mangajin enjoyed some readership in the Japanimation / Anime / Otaku crowd, but Mangajin's selection of manga was generally more reality-based than the Sci-Fi material popular in those circles. (Although it is true that even fantasies provide insight into the psyche and cultural fabric.)

At one time, about half of Mangajin's circulation was in Japan. Readership in Japan was about 70% Japanese and 30% non-Japanese. Japanese readers used the magazine as an English language-learning medium.

Starting in 1993, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs purchased 400+ subscriptions to Mangajin magazine to send to its embassies and consulates around the world -- a solid endorsement of the accuracy and quality of content.
